In addition to the kitchen, we are remodeling the main floor bathroom. We completely gutted the old one. It was dated and cramped, with an unnecessarily low ceiling drop above the shower and deep vanity that made the already narrow room feel even smaller. My vision started with a white foundation to open up the small space. Subway tiles for the walls were a given (just so classic and affordable!). For the floor, we are going with a Carrara marble 1 inch hex. We both love the retro of small hex tile floor and knew we wanted it for the bathroom before we even thought about the large hex for the kitchen. I now love that it will tie in some of the design elements between the two spaces without being too matchy. I thought about doing plain white hex at first, but we decided to go with Carrara to add some color variation and texture.
The color of the vanity was a harder decision. I was originally leaning towards light gray to keep the color palate light and neutral in an effort to visually open up the space. But then I saw some beautiful bathrooms with white tiles and rich wood vanities (exhibit A, exhibit B) so started considering that option. But then we received a sample of a deep navy blue from Semihandmade’s Sarah Sherman Samuel line and we both were surprisingly awed. We didn’t love the beaded front though, and sadly this color doesn’t come in the slab or shaker style. But blue was now on the brain. So when I came across a local manufacturer of vanity cabinets, I was excited to see that they had a new navy blue finish option. Still, I went back and forth between the blue, a pecan wood, and light gray. I was a little worried that a darker vanity would make the room feel smaller, but the design we decided on has an open base and is only 18 inches deep, versus the 23-inch deep vanity that was previously in the space. Just gaining those extra 5 inches should make the room feel bigger. So we decided to take a chance and go for the blue! It feels more modern than the wood, and while I do like gray, I really am kind of sick of seeing it everywhere. I love that our house will be anything but generic. And I plan to still bring some wood elements with a DIY towel ladder and maybe some open shelving.
