Getting my hands dirty

I’m still working on my green thumb. And by working I mean I don’t have one and I haven’t really been working on it. My other half, Lance, seems to think he can change this. One Christmas he gave me an herb growing set, with a planter box and seeds. I managed to get one single sprout of cilantro. Apparently he thought I needed to try again because this year for my birthday he gave me some potted succulents. After about a week, I proved myself useless and he has since completely taken over watering duties. They are looking lovely four months later no thanks to me.

So I didn’t really expect my first house project to be landscaping. But the plants along the driveway were so overgrown that you couldn’t drive a car back to the detached garage without scrapping against the hedges, and the lawn was in desperate need of mowing. Lance was planning on doing it himself this weekend but I volunteered to help, figuring I could learn a few things. I did say I would have nothing to do with mowing since he insisted on getting a push mower, but I figured I could take a stab at pruning. My tutorial was about 30 seconds of a YouTube video so I was mostly winging it, but I ended up taking on most of the driveway work while he focused on the lawn. And I happy to say there were no injuries and it didn’t turn out looking that bad! I can see why some people find gardening meditative – there is something oddly therapeutic and calming about trimming plants and pulling weeds. I probably shouldn’t become a hair dresser though since I found it a little hard to put the shears down…

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a before picture, but here’s a during and after. Proud to say we can now get our car back to the garage and hopefully I didn’t kill any of the plants in the process!
